Allied Health
What is an Medical Lab Technician?
A phlebotomy technician is a healthcare professional who works behind the scenes to help doctors diagnose and treat patients. They collect specimens such as blood, urine, or tissue as well as provide point of care testing. By providing accurate specimens physicians can find signs of infections, diseases, or other health problems. Phlebotomy technicians must pay close attention to details and follow safety rules to make sure test results are accurate. Their work is very important because doctors rely on these results to decide the best treatment for patients.
What do students in the Allied Health program at JRTI do?
Learn and demonstrate the protocols for providing efficient, accurate diagnostic testing results in phlebotomy and electrocardiographic procedures. Students learn how to do venipuncture procedures using ETS, syringe, and winged (butterfly) blood collection methodologies. They also practice the order of draw and tube additives, dermal puncture procedures (fingersticks), point of care testing (POCT) for glucose, and hematocrit, and perform and interpret a 12-lead EKG.
